BACKGROUND

DAVID RUST'S ORIGINAL STUDY

It all began with Sociology of the Furry Fandom by David Rust, which can be read here. From 1998 to 2001, Rust compiled his results after several years of gathering responses at various conventions (as well as collecting a few more responses online). His report was finally published online in 2001. He had managed to collect data from 360 participants; 35 of those took part in the survey online and the other 325 participants had taken part at conventions and gatherings Rust attended.

His results confirmed widely held ideas that most furs were aged 18-35, with 76% of surveyed furs falling into this category. The results also threw into question the theory of the majority of furs being homosexual. His figures suggested that 48% of furs are actually bisexual.

All up, Rust's results were incredibly interesting and his study appears to be the most widely known and referenced amongst the furry community. His work inspired me to replicate his study looking at furries found online on message boards and forums.
